“I would like to say that the funds I donated to endow the Jacyk Centre have never been the main reason for the Centre’s achievements. Money itself would have been useless had it not been complemented by the dedication and professional expertise of those people who worked on the Hrushevsky Project.”

-Petro Jacyk

Peter Jacyk Centre for Ukrainian Historical Research at the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies
The Peter Jacyk Centre for Ukrainian Historical Research was established in 1989 by an initial, significant donation from Petro Jacyk and a subsequent matching of funds by the Province of Alberta on a 2 for 1 basis.

The Centre promotes research and publications in the field of Ukrainian history. Its first major project is the English-language publication of Mykhailo Hrushevsky’s 10-volume(in 12 books) History of Ukraine-Rus’, a fundamental historical work which presents a comprehensive and well-documented synthesis of Ukrainian history from the earliest times to the mid 17th century.

The Centre also sponsors an English-language Monograph Series, a Ukrainian Translation Series and a Ukrainian Historiography in the West. The Centre’s scholars have been regular participants at international conferences, often as panel organizers. The Centre has arranged academic exchanges with universities and institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and awards research grants and doctoral fellowships in Ukrainian history to scholars around the world.

Petro Jacyk Program for the Study of Modern Ukrainian History and Society
The Petro Jacyk Program for the Study of Modern Ukrainian History and Society was established in 2008 with the support of Nadia Jacyk and the Education Foundation and a matching of funds by the Province of Alberta. It is the second major donation from the Foundation to the University of Alberta matched by the Province.

The Program is a co-operative venture between the University of Alberta and two recognized universities, the Ivan Franko Lviv National University and the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, Ukraine.

This new Program is responsible for the academic journal, Ukraina Moderna, as well as organizing international symposia on topics in modern Ukrainian history. The Petro Jacyk Program for the Study of Modern Ukrainian History and Society will foster international collaboration in scholarship, research and education, primarily between Ukraine and Canada.
